It will be celebrated on Sunday 25 January 2026, with the motto: “The word of Christ dwells among you” (Col 3:16).
The Sunday of the Word of God is a profoundly pastoral initiative to make it clear how important it is in the daily life of the Church and our communities to refer to the Word of God, a Word that is not confined to a book, but which remains ever alive and becomes a concrete and tangible sign.
The biblical expression chosen for the celebration of the seventh edition of the Sunday of the Word of God is taken from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians: “The word of Christ dwells among you” (3:16).
At the end of the year of Mercy, Pope Francis proposed setting aside ‘a Sunday given entirely to the Word of God, so as to appreciate the inexhaustible riches contained in that constant dialogue beween the Lord and his people’. As well as highlighting he proclamation of the word of the Lord, and emphasising it in the homily, he suggests a celebration of the commissioning of readers, renewed efforts to provide them with ‘training needed to be genuine proclaimers of the word’ and the giving of the Bible or one of its books to the entire assembly as a way of showing the importance of learning how to read, appreciate and pray daily with Sacred Scripture, especially through the practice of lectio divina.
