Statement from Bishop Cullinan following fatal house fire in Waterford city

On behalf of the priests, religious and faithful of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, I express our profound shock and sorrow at the terrible tragedy which has happened in Waterford city this morning with the heartbreaking news of the loss of several lives.

Our hearts go out to the families who have suffered such unimaginable loss.  We stand in solidarity with all those whose lives have been devastated by this tragedy.

I ask all the faithful throughout the Diocese to join me in praying for those who have died, for their grieving families and loved ones, and for everyone affected by these dreadful events.

My heart also goes out to Father Gerry Chestnutt, the parish priest, who will have a difficult time ahead as he ministers to the bereaved family and supports the community.

We also wish to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency services, Gardaí, firefighters and medical personnel who responded to the scene and who have faced such distressing circumstances.

May Almighty God, in His infinite mercy, receive those who have died into His eternal embrace, and grant consolation, strength and peace to all who mourn.
